Kate Miller is general manager of intu Bromley shopping centre and has more than 16 years experience in the retail sector. She is also chair of the Your Bromley Business Improvement District (BID) - a scheme designed to revitalise the town centre.

The BID could unlock around £3m investment for Bromley via a small levy charged to local businesses, which would be spent on agreed priorities to make the area a more attractive shopping destination.

For the BID to go ahead, more than half of businesses who will be asked to pay the levy must vote in favour.

Ms Miller, 40, told News Shopper about her role at the helm of one of London’s liveliest shopping centres and why she is passionate about the BID.

Describe ‘a day in the life of’ your role at intu Bromley?

Every day differs greatly, but there is never a dull day!

Ultimately our main aim is to make intu Bromley a friendly, welcoming, interesting place to shop.

Most days I will meet with current or new retailers to see how we can support them.

Over the last few weeks we’ve seen lots of great new names coming in to the centre from Yo Sushi to Ecco shoes, Phone Tech and Jack Wills will be opening soon.

What do you enjoy most about your role at intu?

The variety of the role is what keeps it interesting.

A couple of weeks ago I was meeting Postman Pat and Sid the Sloth at the launch of Bromley BID, a few days later we were running a very successful student night, running our digital fashion show and also planning our South East London Breast Cancer Trust fashion show - and yes we are already talking Christmas.

What challenges do you face in your role?

Simply there are never enough hours in the day to get everything done.

There’s so much we want to achieve and I have a fantastic team who support me.

What made you get involved in the BID?

We know Bromley faces specific competitive challenges from Croydon, Bluewater and London and as a town we need to keep developing and improving so that we remain a credible alternative to these major shopping areas.

How are you getting businesses involved in the BID?

We have a Bromley BID working group in place that has a wide range of business representatives on it from the retail, leisure, office, voluntary and services sector.

The working group have been personally visiting businesses in the town to talk about the BID and encourage people to vote in favour.

How would you describe the BID to the everyday visitor to the town centre?

Your Bromley will work to make Bromley an outstanding shopping location, with great events and activities to encourage people to keep visiting an attractive, safe town.

What excites you most about the Your Bromley BID and your plans for the town centre?

Bromley has a superb selection of businesses from High Street chains to smaller independent businesses and excellent restaurants.

It’s a great place to work with strong travel connections.

I want more people to know just how good the offering in Bromley is.

Businesses must cast their votes before November 5.
