Kent firefighters have urged people to keep their chimneys clean after debris caught alight in one in Greenhithe.

Kent Fire & Rescue Service (KFRS) crews were called to a home in King Edward Road at 7.35pm on Friday (October 3).

A spokeswoman for KFRS said: “We were called at 7.33pm to King Edward Road to an overloaded fire and it looked like smoke had seeped through vents into a neighbouring property.

“Crews used a short extension ladder and a fire bucket to put the fire out.

“The fire ceased at 8.08pm and the owner was given advice to regularly sweep their chimney.”

No one was reported injured.

Between 2010 and 2014, KFRS dealt with almost 1,350 chimney fires in Kent and Medway.

One of the main causes is not having your chimney swept regularly – dirty chimneys can cause fires which damage structures, destroy homes and injure or kill people.
