Dick and Dom, two peregrine falcons from Eynsford, are hoping to smash the Guinness World speed record as they free fall 2,000 ft from a hot air balloon.

The hawkish brothers will be tearing up the skies with trainer Jonathan Ames, 29, as he waves them off at a speed of 250mph.

Mr Ames said: “I’m feeling nervous but it should hopefully be alright.

“We have put so much effort into this we are just praying it goes well.

“It is such short notice we had no idea we would be going for the record.

“We have been keeping up with the training and we are really hoping it comes together.”

Mr Ames believes that the feathered pair have the skills to set the record but is a little worried about Dick who seems more interested in chasing pigeons than setting records.

The trainer said: “Dick is being a bit off at the moment, trying to catch pigeons.

“There’s a lot of crows, seagulls and pigeons around at the moment and the worry is that he is going to go for them instead of the lure.”

TOP STORIES: Mr Ames has been using a lure, attached to a drone, to train the falcons in the hope that the birds will reach the dare devil speed of at least 250 mph.

The dynamic duo have been feeding on an exclusive diet of pigeon - the superfood for peregrine falcons, giving them the power and energy they need to cruise past the record.

All eyes will be on the one-year-old falcons, born and raised at Eagle Heights aviary, as they hope to take the record away from a female peregrine falcon in the USA.

The bombastic record attempt will be watched, among others, by Jonathon's dad Allan Ames, 59.

When asked why his son was trying to break the record, Allan replied: “Why not? It’s good fun and that’s what life is all about.

It will be fantastic.”
