In preparation for its centenary year the West Kent Golf Club in Downe looked back over 100 years of golfing as a 1944 Spitfire took to the skies.

On Sunday afternoon (CORR) around half of the 500 club members welcomed their centenary captain Dick Seamer dressed in golfing gear from the 1900s for his celebratory drive in.

He tee'd off at the golf club in Milking Lane with a hickory shafted driver which wouldn't have gone amiss 100 years ago.

Mr Seamer, of Beachwood Drive Keston, told News Shopper: "I would not have changed one bit of the day. It was just perfect and the weather even played ball."

The club, which spent its early years based in Petts Wood's Jubilee Park, celebrates its centenary anniversary next year, with several celebratory events in the pipeline.

To start the celebrations off with a bang the centenary committee organised for a Spitfire Mark 9 to make a flypast over the course.

Mr Seamer, 66, who has been with the club for more than 50 years, said it was an emotional sight for many members as the second world war jet flew over.

He added: "I am looking forward to a great year ahead for our wonderful club which has been a huge part of my life."
