A 17-year-old boy died when the car he was travelling in sped off after a street fight in Brockley before smashing into a lamppost.

Police believe a group of youths attacked the car by throwing things at it, causing the vehicle to crash as it headed towards Loampit Vale.

Officers were initially called to reports of a fight in St Norbert Road  on Saturday (September 26) just after 3pm.

After receiving reports of the crash police, London Ambulance Service paramedics and London's Air Ambulance rushed to the scene and found three men inside the wreckage of the car.

A 17-year-old boy was taken to a south London hospital in a critical condition where he later died at around 5.20pm.

The other two men suffered minor cuts to their hands.

Next of kin have been informed and formal identification awaits.

A post mortem examination was scheduled to take place yesterday afternoon (September 27) at Greenwich Mortuary.

Four men aged 20, 21, 23 and 19 have all been arrested in connection with the investigation and remain in custody at various south London police stations.

Detectives from the Homicide and Major Crime Command (HMCC) are investigating.

Detective Chief Inspector Luke Marks said: "The incident occurred mid-afternoon and there were a number of people around who may have witnessed what happened or the events leading up to the death of this teenage boy.

"We are still trying to understand the sequence of events and it is vital that those who know what may have happened come forward and assist us with our inquiry."
