A murder investigation has been launched after a man was found dead under a bridge with serious head injuries.

Police were called by a member of the public to reports of a man collapsed just before 2pm on Wednesday (September 23).

His body was discovered near the train station, along Walmer Terrace.

MORE TOP STORIES Officers and paramedics from the London Ambulance Service (LAS) attended and found a 29-year-old man with serous head injuries.

A spokesman for the LAS confirmed he was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is thought the man who died may have been homeless.

At the scene today, (September 25), a cordon and police still remained.

Wayne Morgan, 46, originally from Plumstead, told News Shopper: “Underneath the bridge I know people camp there, when you walk down the bottom of the stairs there’s a flyover underneath.

“I know a few guys sleep there overnight. It’s shocking to hear that someone's died.

“I used to walk there a lot, I hope it’s not someone I know.

“Drug users used to use that bit, and drinkers.

“I don’t know what happened, maybe it was an argument.”

Burrage Road resident Charlie Walker, 31, said: “There’s about four of them who stay there, at least 10 or so go and drink there.

“It was probably an argument. People get aggressive off drink.

“I won’t take another route; it might be different from a woman’s point of view.”

Opposite the scene, in Morley’s Chicken Shop, along Woolwich Road, worker Kamal Nirmal said the murder worried them.

He told News Shopper: “We weren’t open at the time, the police were here when we came to open the shop.

“They said somebody died, he was quite young.

“It’s really worrying we had planned to increase the licensing hours until after 1am, but now my boss we’re going to cancel that idea because it’s dangerous.

“If we had to be here by ourselves closing, it’s dangerous.”

The deceased’s next of kin are in the process of being informed.

A post-mortem examination for the man will take place in due course.
