Murder appeal continues

A POST-MORTEM found a murder victim suffered chest injuries after being shot.

Officers were called at 8.15pm to a flat in Milford Towers, Rushey Green, Catford, on Thursday after reports of shots being fired.

They found a man suffering from gunshot injuries.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man has been formally identified as 24-year-old Warren Gray of Catford.

His next of kin have been informed.

The post-mortem was held on Saturday and revealed the cause of death as a gunshot wound to the chest.

Police say they believe the man was in a friend's flat between 3pm and 7pm before returning to his own flat.

At around 8pm, the victim returned to his friend's flat, pursued by two suspects.

Once inside the flat one of the suspects fired two shots through a door in the direction of the victim, fatally wounding him.

A firearam was later found discarded in a bin in nearby Wildfell Road.

Officers are keeping an open mind regarding the motive.

Neighbours have spoken of their shock at the murder.

One man, in his 50s, of Silvermere Road, said: "The residents are shocked. They need to do something about that block - the East Block.

"They are mugging old ladies coming home from church. It used to be quiet but now it's horrible."

One woman, who did not wish to be named, said: "We had a load of hoodies hanging around last night. My dog woke me up at quarter to 12. There were police everywhere down the road and hoodies were all outside my gate."

A 37-year-old woman, of Doggett Road, said: "There's always something going on here.

This place is getting worse and worse. The youngsters cause the problems here. If the Government doesn't do something things are going to get much worse."

An 18-year-old boy, of Nelgarde Road, said: "You see a lot of shady men hanging about. There's a lot of stuff that goes down.

"Obviously there's a lot of people doing stuff in that building that don't live in that building. Of couse you see a lot of police but not like now, not since that girl died."

The Met wants to hear from witnesses to the murder.

An incident room has opened under Detective Inspector Geoff Whitehouse from Operation Trident.

He said: "We are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have seen a group of four black males aged between 20 and 25 years some wearing hooded tops running from the Milford Towers area via Brookdale Road in the direction of Wildfell Road.

"They may have discarded a number of items en route.

"It is vital that anyone who may have come across anything or who has information contacts the Incident Room 020 82474553."

A 42-year-old man was arrested on Thursday in connection with the incident.

He has been bailed pending further inquries to return on July 5.

Anyone with information should call 020 8247 4553 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

  • In September 2005 the remains of Rochelle Holness were found dumped in bin bags in a supermarket trolley near a stairwell leading to the estate.

John McGrady pleaded guilty to murder in April last year and was jailed for life.

The 48-year-old snatched Rochelle from a phone box near her home after she went out to call her boyfriend.

It is believed Rochelle was killed within hours of entering McGrady's home on the Milford Towers Estate.

Her remains were found three days later.

Her mother Jennifer Bennett said: "It's like I'm reliving my nightmare all over again.

"I came here to make sure it wasn't another child. I feel so sick to my stomach as it is reminding me of the sheer horror of my daughter's death.

"I was told the police would clean up this estate. I can't believe they have not put better security there. They should have police patrolling on the estate after my daughter.

"They didn't expect another murder to happen. But I knew in my gut something was going to happen. It makes me feel so angry. I'm fuming with the law."

a year ago my niece rochelle was murdered on the estate and they said they will have tight saftey on the estate rubbish now another life has been taking once again what are the goverment going to do about whats going on i keepted on saying hope its not another child i fill so sad for these parents who loose there child in these circumstance they need to knock these flats down its an easy target to kill people with out them probley even getting cought only through dna if they dont do someting now about the estae there will be more killing on the estate what are them going to do wait for another murder again or what

I lived and worked in Catford from the age of 2yrs until I was 46yrs. I no longer 'survive' there but chose to move on and 'live' somewhere else. In previous years I've known children with a gun and live ammunition to be firing at passing cars. My own wife was attacked with a knife outside Milford Towers and robbed (the police at the time suggested moving away being the best course of action). I can recall one incident which both amused and frightened me. Youths at the top of Milford Tower were hurling concrete slabs onto people below who were coming out of the car park towards Holbeach Road. A slab that would have either killed my wife or I if it had hit us landed at our feet. Fearing some other unfourtuate soul would not be so lucky I rang the police. They did respond an hour or so later. However, without bothering to get out of his police car the lone police officer explained he could do nothing as he was on his own. When a chunk of concrete landed on the roof of the police car he accelerated off down the road never to be seen again. All that could be heard was the laughter of the yobs above... and you wonder why crime in Catford is as bad as it is?

I agree that the estate should be demolished. It is an eye sore and the level of crime is just ridiculous. How many more people will be killed before something is actually done? Please write to Jim Dowd MP and Steve Bullock calling on them to take action.

I lived and grew up in the area and use to playing in the car park and i would never allow my kids out to play in there. I have seen milford towers go down hill over the years . Ive seen dealers selling weed and seen it progress to crack . I belive the towers need to be knock down as policing , or cameras will never stop what goes on up there, if this does not happen the police will be the next target.I really feel it for the parents friends and family of the now two victims. if in anyway you can help to lobby and get things change in milford towers please do before we have more deaths.

I spent my teenage years in Nelgarde Road, using the phone boxes at Milford Towers.

I no longer live in Catford, in fact you couldn't get much further away.....I am bringing my children up in New Zealand.

My kids are not street wise at all and it will be interesting to see how they react when we come back later in the year for a few weeks.

My kids go to Holbeach school in catford, so i pass Milford towers most days. I think its a horrible place and lewisham council should stop putting families into conditions like that. Why dont they make milford towers into a big council depot? and offices. It would bring a bit of regeneration to the area. I know the gangs would still have the gangs in other areas but it might be more accessable for the police to deal with it.

That place is a disgrace I live next to Milford Towers I have been gang mugged in the surrounding roads and beaten absolutely black and blue yet they are still doing nothing about that hell hole probably won't it's not high enough priority as no one seemingly in the public spotlight has suffered at the hands of the mindless stupid idiots that cause trouble there, re house the people living there give them a chance at a decent life and knock the dam thing down before anyone else dies, they spend money doing the local area up and yet what's the point Milford Towers brings nothing trouble into the area

I work in Catford Shopping centre, I am afraid to work here now.
The policy in this country is, shoplifters get away with what they do, they become more serious criminals who also get away with it, these become murderers and then everybody is astonished and look for reason of such situation, I say wake up!Arm police (criminals already have firearms) and start punishing for crime.

I am a postman in catford & sometimes i have to do milford towers, thats the only one i feel uncomfortable about doing, i know the blocks like the back of my hand but for an emergency service to go in there, they would be lost including the police so i dont even think the residents feel safe in there own home & would be glad to be rehoused, i also feel that the only way to make that part of catford safer & better is to knock down the entire thing, & build a shopping center like they have in lewisham, or evict everyone apart from the elderly & families, as its unfair to mix them with thugz who will only cause them to live in fear.

When is the government going to start taking notice of these horrific crime that is happening on our streets wvery day?Is it because they think it does not affect them yet well newsflash !! Gun,knife and gun crime is not just a black thing it only that the media likes to highlight certain issues to bring our people down even more.obviuously if we stopped warring and killing each other they would not have nothing negative to say or print .
I agree the hell hole of an estate needs to be pulled down and i thought that before the two murders so what is it going to take i ask again?? A friend of mine was recently housed on that estate and trust me he can handle his own and he is scared everytime he leaves his house so can u imagine how vulnurable peolpe with families and elderly people feel why exactly are they still rehousing people on the hell hole anyway?????

since our close friend died in the flats (rochelle) at the hands of an evil loser. to hear my boyfriends cousin died in the same place i am shocked at the ability of another death caused to another young person i am only 18 myself and i think it is so bad that half of the people my age have been to more funerals than our parents i have only attended 1 funeral for some one that died due to natural causes and that was my 38 year old uncle this has to stop i have had enough of burrying my friends all the time. Because when they get killed its not just the one person suffering its all the people around them aswell. Us as the youth of now need to stop all this before we all have our own kids and it all turns out 10 times worse. it shouldnt be mothers grieving over their murdered kids most parents want to die before their kids thats the way its ment to be.

I used to go out with Warren Gray the victim of this horrible killing 10 years ago. I have many memories of our relationship & they are allgood. Whoever took his life i know they had no reason to cause he was a nice, generous, considerate gentleman with a loving heart. I would like to send my sympathy to his parents who i know are truly feeling that their son is no longer here because i am.

I knew Warren and know his immediate family personally. Whoever did this must be told:

Not only have you taken a life you have also destroyed the souls of many.

While you sleep at night they will cry, while you move freely in the day they will forever be haunted by the shadow death that now hangs over them.

They are good, decent people trying their best to survive in what can only be described as hell. Warren and his family did not deserve this.

All i have to say that i am very sorry to everyone who has suffered a loss, especially to gun crime. The thing that is most disturbing is that these crimes are being commited by children not adults. Where are the parents? That is a question that contiuously replays in my mind. I no longer reside in Catford anymore but i always used to cut through the car park to go to the athletic track. In a few years time, how will be able to survive? The youths are taking over. This murder was happened around 8ish, which is not even that late. I am very sorry for anyone who has to live in a estate, especially those who are raising children in those conditions. I don't know how anyone can go day by day living in milford towers IT NEEDS TO BE DEMOLISHED!!!!!!!

Lewisham is letting its people down, crime is rife, street muggings are becoming something to expect.Children are being kicked out of schools then left to wander the streets, kids are treated as lesser beings, families have broken down. fathers are absent, mothers are struggling to keep control. Single mums blamed for wrongs, when society creates a system thats better for the single person. Love is lacking in our society. Kids are being raised by drug addicted parents who show the kids no love, the kids get ignored at school no one picks up on their suffering. Some kids grow to believe they have no hope no prospects. There is lack of extended families and people that care in the community. Kids that are lacking should be identified at an early age, then perhaps the right morals and values can be installed into them to make this kind of crime a thing of the past. We are all accountable. Some of these kids that have lacked grow up to turnout to be gun welding thugs...so if you see a kid getting a raw deal dont wait for the authorities to get involved make time to show you care and that not all adults dont give a **** unless it is there own. I cry for every child that is murdered that dies before their time. I lost a sister at 18 and a brother at 18. I try to make a difference. I am a single mum through no choice of my own but i love my son and give him what he needs to make a stable grounded young man. I think of the whole picture, not just my part.
Noone has the right to take a life and my deepest condolenses go out to these parents. noone can bring back these lives into their lives.People need to take a good look at themselves and start doing their own little something in order to make this world a better place to live.
do not allow this to blacken your hearts let it light them up with hope and faith in the future that these young lives were not lost in vain. all this killing has to stop and now is the time.NOW.

I have lived in catford for 18 years and my bedroom window looks right on to it and every time i look out i think of rochelle and now warren,i knew them both. It makes me sick to think that this man was living up with out a care in the world looking down on us all.I think the block should get knocked down and soon but fom what i hear there buliding a new 8 story high block but a bit more open plan where the dogs was whats the point.If i had kids i would not what them here where the feds dont even care plus have no control jokers.I hope rochelle and warrens family can find some sort of peace and macradey you get whats coming to you in pen may you rot in jail you sick f...

I have not sleep for two days as a friend who was not aware about the area bid a property for me in Milford Tower and the council has offered me a permenant property before i viewed it
and tell me I m homless i have not right to refuse otherwise they will terminate my contrat
I have bidding for the past 3 years being living in a hostel for a year with 1 child and a pregnancy
I gave up my work as Chef .After a complain because Homless has lost my file in 2006 they finally
offer me a private temporary place in Downham
The council did not have anything better to offer me and think Milford Tower is a suitable place to live with children. The Council will always have the escuse of your error but do they not considered the time you live in hostel and they re surprise children nowadays are involved in gang and crime
Does the environment matter ?
They still rehousse family with children permenantely in Unsafe Block
and discriminate children with vulnerable families with no consideration of their welbeing
I m more concern about my career as I m planning to work from home as a childminder and teach french
but because of the reputation of the building , parent would not trust me to leave their children in fear even myself as a lone parent I have to refuse move in
It will stereotype me and the children
Not just because we do not have money to give better life for our kids means we do not care about their education needs and and their safety
What the government has to say about family who are in vulnerable situation
I have feeled very down and discriminated as the 5 properties My friends bid for me last week
the only final place Lewisham coucil thinks is reasonable for my kids is Milford Tower
I have to make an appeal
And i think Lewisham Council should stop lying about the description as the advertissment on the homesearch did not reflet for what i have seen
They never said it was a Block
They said it was a maisonnette in purpouse built house with own garden
In french Maisonette means a duplex house in a resident
I pray for the family victims of crime of the area and the family who are living there in Fear
In the Name of Jesus things will soon change
The council will have to stop avertising this place permenantely and get rid tenants of the Block or offer a suitable police patrol and cctv camera in the lift and the Block
