A group of volunteers and residents are fighting to save a community centre in Lee, ear-marked for possible closure by Lewisham Council.

Campaigners have so far collected over 900 signatures - on paper and online - against the closure of Brandram Road Community Centre.

They say vital local services and groups like children’s dance classes and pregnant mothers' yoga will be lost if it is closed in April 2016.

Chair of the Brandram Road Community Centre committee Sarah Hanks, who along with fellow committee members is leading the campaign, said "The centre is almost self-financing; our hire fees cover our utilities, insurance, nearly all repairs and maintenance and a paid administrator post to run the centre.

"We cost Lewisham Council very little.

"The centre serves a diverse local community and our activities are wide ranging.

“We have been an important and valued community resource for more than 30 years.

“The reason we’ve been given is that the area is over-subscribed for community centres but we are busy every day.

“We see no sense in the closure.”

A Lewisham Council spokesperson said: "Since 2010 the council has saved £121million and will have to cut a further £83million from its budget by 2020.

“Finding these levels of savings means some very hard decisions have to be made across all council services.

“We are now reviewing the number of community centres in the borough and are consulting in more detail with voluntary and community groups that may be affected.

“No decision has been made and final proposals will be presented to the mayor and cabinet in November."
