UPDATE: A second crash on the Blackwall Lane flyover at 8.10am is the latest incident in a series of problems on roads around the tunnel so far today.

Queues are currently backed up to the Woolwich Road flyover, according to Transport for London.

Highways England said traffic was "not helped by two accidents in the queues so far, at Blackwall Lane."

Severe tailbacks around the Blackwall Tunnel this morning (September 17) worsened when a lorry and car crashed in the queueing traffic.

Drivers are warned to expect delays, as Northbound tunnel approach is currently congested to Shooters Hill Road at Sun in the Sands.

Rush hour congestion was magnified at 7am, when a collision - in which no one was injured - partially blocked Blackwall Lane.

Frustrated motorist Paul Harding tweeted that the Blackwall Tunnel  had won - in the battle to cross the river.

A Met Police spokesman said: "We were called at 7am to a damage only collision involving a car and a lorry.

"The vehicle was moved by quarter past.

"The road is now cleared."

Meanwhile, at around 5.30am, a broken down vehicle blocked a lane at the entrance to the southbound tunnel - causing delays on the other side of The Thames.
