Counter-demonstrators faced off against the BNP

Chants from pro-immigration supporters drowned out British National Party (BNP) members during Saturday's face-off at Lunar House.

BNP supporters gathered outside the Home Office processing centre to protest against UK migration.

But the roughly 20 members turned up they were faced down by trade unionist and anti-fascist demonstrators who arrived to derail the rally.

When asked why so few BNP members had turned up, Croydon and Sutton representative Dave Clarke said that many of them were working.

He said images of drowned Syrian children were "obviously tragic" but added: "They want to stay in Europe when they come and not return to their country when it is peaceful."

Counter-demonstrator Tarnjit Chana, a lawyer from Stockwell, said: "I'm a refugee myself, so I know exactly what people go through to get to another country.

"I came here from Uganda in 1972 with nothing, no shoes, nothing and I've contributed to this country.

"But that's not the conversation we are having here, whether it's in the media or face-to-face. The way we talk about immigrants and refugees is completely wrong.

"All you hear is that we are going to come over here and take, take, take. There is so little about what we contribute and that is something that needs to change."

The rally ended peacefully early in the early afternoon.
