A pro-choice group in Lewisham staged a campaign outside a surgery in response to recent pro-life protests.

Lewisham Pro-Choice Campaign, which formed this summer, staged the event outside St Johns Medical Centre, along Loampit Hill, on Saturday (August 29).

One of the group's founding members, Amina Mangera, explained that when her and her partner for more than 10 years, Ian Crosson, walked past the centre they would see pro-life campaigners.

Ms Mangera said: “There’s this group with huge billboards and pictures of what a foetus looks like. The group have been coming for several months.

“There’s a nursery round the corner and a mother and child clinic, so many people were walking past and seeing it. I think that’s why a lot of people are angry; they find the photos very intimidating.

People can make appointments to see Marie Stopes, who provide sexual health services, every Tuesday and Thursday at the Lewisham surgery.

Ms Mangera, who lives near Lewisham Way, added: “I feel passionate that a woman should have a choice and shouldn’t be forced to do anything.”

Management partner of the surgery, Colin Stears, said: “We obviously support the commissioning by public health for the residents of Lewisham to enable them to have choice in the services that they receive.”
