Petts Wood residents hope to put a stop to a new Vodafone pylon which could blight the views of a nearby amenity park.

Trevor Williams, 76, who has lived with wife Vedantee in Franks Wood Avenue for the past year, has raised his concerns over the potential installation of a 12.5m high telephone mast on the edge of the Frankswood green.

Alarm bells rang when he and his neighbours received a letter from Bromley Council informing them of a public consultation period which has now closed.

Mr Williams told News Shopper: "It's spoiling a very good amenity park.

"The pylon itself which is 44ft high is at least three times higher than the existing lamppost.

"It's 10ft higher than the three trees with their summer leaves, imagine what it would be like without its leaves on."

Dilek Pastirmacioglu, who lives on the other side of the green, has started up a petition against the mast.

The amenity park is a small triangle green bordered by Franks Wood Avenue, Crescent Drive and Lakewood Road.

Mr Williams said the view of the green is enjoyed by residents and passersby, but fears it will be destroyed by the pylon which he says will affect 30 per cent of the park's frontage.

He added: "It would certainly make a difference to the uninterrupted view of the green.

"These cabinets are rather large I feel they might attract the little louts to throw their empty pizza boxes, paper wrappings and drinks cans.

"Why can't they [Vodafone] put it in Tent Peg Lane that has got a large pylon already?

"It would cause less disruption than anywhere else."

A spokeswoman for Vodafone said the low-powered devices have to be located near where people use their phone.

She said: "We understand that some people have concerns about masts in their community but without a mast nearby, mobile devices and all the service so many of us now rely on, wouldn’t be available to local people."
