A serial shoplifter has been jailed for eight months, after stealing food and razors worth £172 from Dartford shops.

Michael David McCartney, 23, stole meat and razors from a shop in Hawley Road, an electric razor in Prospect Place, and meat and milk in Esparto Way - on different days in June and July.

McCartney, who lives on Willow Road, pleaded guilty to three counts of shoplifting and was sentenced to 120 days in prison at Medway Magistrates' Court on August 19.

Because the offences were committed during the operational period of a suspended sentence, his jail term was double to 240 days.

McCartney must also pay a £150 criminal courts charge and an £80 victim surcharge.

The following day, a 27-year-old appeared at Dartford and Gravesham Magistrates' Court, after stealing food and household items totaling £820.

Jimmy Obie Lee, of York Road in Northfleet, stole food worth £159.50 from a shop in London Road, Greenhithe, two pressure cookers in Greenhithe, as well as a sewing machine, dustbin, vacuum cleaner and a fish tank - on two days in July and August.

Lee pleaded guilty to five counts of shoplifting, and was sentenced to 90 days in prison - suspended for 12 months.

Magistrates ordered him to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work in the next 12 months.

He must also pay £238.50 compensation, a £180 criminal courts charge, £85 costs and an £80 victim surcharge.
