With just a week since GCSE results were announced, Southeastern is hunting for recruits to join its apprenticeship scheme, which has benefited two young men from Greenwich.

The 12-month scheme, which is in its fourth year, is open for 16 to 19 year olds, who are looking for the first rung on the ladder to a career in the rail industry.

Apprentices undergo on-the-job training, working on ticket gate lines, dispatching trains and working in ticket offices and gain a level 2 NVQ qualification in customer services.

Sam Town, who works at the Charlton station ticket office, joined the trainee programme in 2012.

The 21-year-old said: “Throughout the scheme I experienced many different roles, all of which are vital in running an operational railway, safely.

“I found the transition from apprentice to full-time employee really fluid as I had had the time to learn and mature within the company with the support and training from my managers.

Sean Moore, 19, who works at New Eltham station, said: “Without the opportunities that were made available to me because of the scheme, I would not be working where I am today."
