Keeper Jordan Archer pulled off a string of impressive saves to ensure Millwall left Scunthorpe with a clean sheet and a point on Saturday.

The former Spurs youngster made his first league start for the Lions after being called in at the expense of out of sorts David Forde.

And an early save in a one-on-one from Paddy Madden, who later blazed a Scunthorpe penalty wildly over the bar, eased Archer straight into the game.

He said: “I’m disappointed not to get the three points because we did have a few chances but the boys dug in deep and it was a great point to take away.

“It was my first game, so there were a few nerves.

“So to make an early save settled them and enabled me to relax and enjoy myself.”
Archer made another superb stop Madden’s injury time header, which he rated as his best of the game.

He said: “It's always nice to make a few saves but it if I had to choose one it would be the one at the end where I tipped it onto the crossbar.

“The boys dug in deep for the last 20 minutes and it would have been horrible for them to score at the end.

“For me to help the boys out and make a save, that’s what I'm there for.”

Even though it was his first league game, Archer commanded his own area and revealed this was something he had been working on.

He explained: “It is part and parcel of goalkeeping.

“You’ve got to come out and relieve the stress that a team’s under, so anything I can come out and collect or punch will help the team.

“I'm more than happy to do that. I’m quiet off the field but on the field I do dish out a few bollockings.

“Whoever is in my line of sight gets it.”

Archer replaced long-serving Millwall keeper David Forde for the trip to Scunthorpe and was quick to praise the Irish international’s influence.

He said: “Prior to the game and after the game he was in my ear encouraging me and giving me praise, so he’s been brilliant.

“I’m still young and I’m still developing.

“Fordy’s got a few years on me, so he’s been around a long time and his leadership is outstanding.

“Even when he’s not playing you’ll see he’s still vocal and he still helps the team.”

After performing well in Millwall’s League Cup exit against Barnet, Archer revealed he was a bit annoyed to be left out for the Coventry game.

He said: “I was disappointed but Fordy didn’t really deserve to be dropped, he played well at Shrewsbury and the boys won.

“I knew if I kept working hard then eventually I would get an opportunity and the opportunity came today.

“We're at home next Saturday against Chesterfield, so if I am starting I look forward to walking out at The Den.”
