'Community spirit is alive' with a restoration project at Sidcup's secret garden.

Volunteers are keen to restore the much-loved walled garden at Sidcup Palace to its former glory, clearing it of out-of-control weeds and re-planting flower beds.

Over 50 local residents are taking part in the clear-up, which is being led by Bexley councilor Rob Leitch.

On Saturday, Aug 8, the action team from Sidcup Garden Project spend a scorching morning clearing weeds - filling a whole skip with green waste.

Coun Leitch said: "We live in an age where community spirit is considered to have been lost.

"However, the early stages of this project suggest that Sidcup's community spirit is alive and kicking.

"To have so many local residents signing up, local businesses offering sponsoring and Lark in the Park coming on board speaks volumes about how much local people care about their area.

"We are privileged to have our own secret garden in Sidcup and together, we will restore it to its former glory.

"Who knows, we could even be at Chelsea in a few years."

The Lark in the Park team

A team of youngsters from Lark in the Park fixed and painted fencing alongside the side, as well as clearing border beds for sponsoring businesses.

Ruxley Manor Garden Centre, Middleton Murray recruitment, NJ Lewis & Associates surveyors and INDALO Property Services have all taken on two-year flower bed sponsorships.

Volunteers will continue to clear border beds, cut the grass and maintain new planting - throughout the project's first year.
