A good Samaritan helped a man trapped in his car escape the wreckage after it flipped onto its roof in Beckenham.

The bright red car smashed into two parked cars last Wednesday (August 5) before landing upside down – with the driver still strapped inside.

A Fire and Rescue unit from Lewisham and two other fire engines were scrambled to the crash along Worsley Bridge Road, at its junction with Greycot Road, just before 12pm.

Richard Mcallister, 46, was walking along the road when he heard a “crashing sound”.

He said: “I heard some crashing around like a van with boxes in the back. Then there was a final really loud bang, I turned round expecting to see a van then I saw the red car on its back, it was still moving, still scraping towards the bus stop.”

The car narrowly missed the bus stop along the road, and Mr Mcallister said the emergency services treated the man inside it when they arrived.

“All the windows were smashed, there wasn’t any glass left so I put my arm through to help him get out. It was very difficult because the roof and windows were all smashed.

“He came out the window as the door was crushed; it was a really small space. When he was coming out because there was so much glass he cut his arm quite badly.

“He was very calm, I think he was in shock. I took him out and asked him to sit down at the bus stop.”

Mr Mcallister, who lives with his partner John Compton in Calverley Close, added: “I went back in to get a notebook for him which had fallen out and as I did that I smelt petrol and saw a trail of it. I grabbed this book and took the man and led him further away in case anything happened.

“I’ve never had to do that before. It was an experience.”

The male driver – the only occupant – was treated by the London Ambulance Service (LAS) for an arm injury.

He was taken to the the Princess Royal University Hospital in Farnborough.
