Commuters faced travel chaos last night after a man was killed at Brockley station.

Scenes from London Bridge showed packed stations as services were delayed, cancelled or diverted.

Thousands of passengers were forced to find alternative routes home, as replacement buses tried to ease the congestion.

Normal service began to resume late last night, although some commuters were delayed for hours following the disruption.

Both the London Overground and trains were affected after a man tragically died after being hit by a train at Brockley station last night (August 3) around 5.30pm.

Paramedics from the London Ambulance Service (LAS) pronounced him dead at the scene.

Eyewitness Mark English was on his way to home to Highbury just before the incident.

The 41-year-old said: “I just got off the bus and was walking towards the station. I was about level with the south bound platform, so I could see pretty clearly. As I was walking up the fast bound train went through. I saw the guy, it all happened so quickly.

“I turned away momentarily and out of the corner of my eye I saw the guy come off the bridge and hit the train. He came down and there was this horrendous bang as he hit the train. He was wearing a light brown jacket.

“He could have jumped or fallen. It's got quite high sides, there are barriers. If he fell he would have to have climbed up on the edge because the sides are quite high.”

The languages teacher continued: “The train carried on through the station, it couldn't slam on the brakes in time. When people realised what had happened they were in complete shock, it was a really peculiar atmosphere. Station staff were on the scene within minutes and people coming over to our side of the platform obviously had seen it very clearly. They were distraught.

“I was in shock not believing what I'd seen. It was surreal.”

There was an outcry on social media as photos and video of the deceased began to surface.

Shocked commuters vented their anger at the disrespect caused by posting the images, where the man can clearly be seen on the tracks.

The video was shared many times after being originally posted.
