Olympic weightlifter Zoe Smith and paralympic wheelchair rugby athlete Andy Barrow put the Greenwich Centre’s new gym to the test at its official opening.

Greenwich councillors were joined by the athletes and British sprinter David Bolarinwa to unveil the centre, which has state-of-the-art leisure, library, health and training facilities.

The leisure centre, run by GLL, has a six-lane swimming pool, shallow learner pool, two fitness studios and a gym with more than 100 pieces of equipment.

Designed as a digital hub, the library, which has seen a surge in visitors since its opening, has 48 PCs and a children’s area with dedicated tablets for them to use.

The Greenwich Centre is also home to an NHS health facility, crèche and café.

An adult and community learning facility, run by Twin Group, will provide a diverse range of courses for residents, international students, individuals and groups.

Greenwich Council leader Councillor Denise Hyland, said: “It is a superb building which delivers on our vision of delivering new, modern and more efficient services to residents.”
