Police were forced to close the Blackwall Tunnel on Tuesday night (July 28) after a woman in hi-vis decided to take a stroll through it.

The woman, seen on CCTV with a hi-vis vest and a bag, walked through the southbound tunnel.

Officers shut the tunnel at around 9pm before driving in on blue lights to pick up the wayward wanderer and take her to the police station.

A Met Police spokesman said: "We were called by members of the public at 8.54pm and 9.03pm to reports of a woman in a luminous vest walking in the Blackwall Tunel.

"The woman was detained and the tunnel was closed southbound while officers dealt with the incident."

Transport for London (TfL) said on Twitter: "Police have now removed the pedestrian from the southbound Blackwall Tunnel, it's open to reopen."

The tunnel reopened at around 9.20pm but motorists were met with more misery as a broken down car and emergency maintenance caused further delays.
