Statistics reveal that Londoners are losing more than £450m in betting machines.

The Campaign for Fairer Gabling released figures showing how much residents are pouring into Fixed Odds Betting Terminals (FOBTs).

FOBTs are standard touch-screen gaming machines found in betting shops, where people can play a variety of games such as roulette, poker and black jack.

Research into the machines showed in 2014 Lewisham residents lost £14,429,863, followed by those in Greenwich with £12,597,499.

The people of Bromley were out of pocket by £11,223,227, and Bexley residents lost the least with £8,932,772.

MORE TOP STORIES The figures also showed Lewisham residents inserted the most cash into the machines to either play or continue their game, with £75,946,646 poured into the machines in the borough.

Those in Greenwich deposited £66,302,628, in Bromley it was £59,069,614 and in Bexley £47,014,591.

The borough with the highest losses and amount inserted was the City of Westminster, with £25,194,999 lost and £132,605,256 gambled.

The amount lost by each borough also matches the number of FOTBs, as Lewisham was recorded as having 227, Greenwich had 198, Bromley had 177 and Bexley had 141.

Overall Londoners poured £2.5 billion into the machines last year, losing a total of £458,548,974.

The figures come from The Campaign for Fairer Gambling and are estimated using industry and Gambling Commission data.
