St Mary Cray station was closed today (July 9) after a woman scaled a signal gantry and threatened to throw herself off.

Emergency services were called to the station at around 10.30am to reports of a woman on a bridge threatening to jump.

British Transport Police, Met Police, London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service attended.

The woman climbed down voluntarily and was treated by paramedics before being taken to the Princess Royal University Hospital in Farnborough.

The station reopened at around 12pm and services between Swanley and Bromley South were delayed by up to 40 minutes for a further hour and a half.

Doug Morbey, of Kedleston Drive, was on his way to St Mary Cray station to catch a train to Bromley to go shopping when he saw four police officers guarding the entrance.

The 70-year-old told News Shopper: "When I looked along the line, I saw the fire crews, more police and ambulance workers.

"I didn't hang around for too long."

One witness told the News Shopper the person who climbed the signal gantry was a distressed teenage girl.

Trains were also diverted via Orpington and Southeastern routes between Dover Priory, Ashford International, Ramsgate, Canterbury West and London Victoria were affected.

Thameslink services between Sevenoaks and Bedford were also delayed.

A Southeastern spokesman earlier said: “We have a trespasser on a signal gantry at the London end of St Mary Cray.

"Trains are currently running at a caution past the gantry.

“Emergency services are attending the scene.”
