The Old Manor Way playground will not be sold, after Bexley Council agreed to remove it from their 'at risk' list of parks which could be sacrificed for council cuts.

The much-loved Barnehurst playground has been the subject of protests - after it was included on a list of 26 green spaces within the Bexley borough, which were at risk of being sold off.

The council's change of heart was announced in last night's Places, Overview and Scrutiny Committee meeting (June 30).

Cabinet member of community safety, environment and leisure Coun Peter Craske said: "Residents affected have expressed their views clearly over the last few months.

"I am pleased to say we have listened to their concerns and can confirm that this much loved and well used playground will be removed from our list.

"I would also thank the Barnehurst Ward Councillors for their sterling work in representing the views of their residents."

MP for Bexleyheath and Crayford David Evennett said: “I am delighted that Old Manor Way Playground will not be sold.

"I met with constituents at the Playground to support their campaign to save it and made strong representations to the Council urging them not to proceed with the sale.

"Given the need for safe places for children to play and exercise, this is the right decision.”

The formal decision to remove the Old Manor Way playground from the list of sites for 'disposal' will be made at the cabinet meeting on July 21, at 7.30pm at the Civic Offices in Bexleyheath.

Members of the public are welcome to attend.
