Police tweeted: "This could have been MUCH worse. It's only luck that this child wasn't more seriously hurt."

Deptford Green headteacher Bob Ellis said: "A boy arrived at school today and he'd been injured.

"We assume he'd been injured somewhere in the area before school.

"He got himself to school and we contacted the relevant emergency services."

He added: "If there have been any arrests it certainly hasn't been a student from this school."

A spokesman for the London Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 8.50am to reports of a stabbing at a school on Edward Street.

"We sent a single responder by car and an ambulance crew to the scene and arrived within six minutes.
