Today this could be the greatest day of their lives because Take That have been given the keys to Greenwich’s O2 arena.

The band were honoured after reaching the milestone of 21 performances at the old Millennium Dome – a record first established by Prince in 2007 and equalled by Gary, Mark and Howard on the ninth show of their 10 night residency.

In 2008, the man-band sold out eight shows in 2008, a New Year’s Eve performance the same year and played the Jingle Bell Ball in 2014 and the Brits in 2011 and 2015 on top of their current 10-date run.

The key given to the band was designed using elements of their album artwork and will be housed on the walk to the stage at the O2, visible to everyone who performs there in the future.

The O2’s general manager Rebecca Kane Burton said: “It’s a remarkable achievement to hit the record established by Prince of 21 shows, but Take That have now smashed it.

“We want to celebrate hitting the magic 21 and the keys to the world’s most popular music venue seemed a fitting tribute to one of this country’s best loved bands. Their run of ten nights this month have been astonishing; the whole theatrical spectacle and pure energy of the shows has more than entertained hundreds of thousands of fans who have enjoyed them at The O2.”
