Residents had to be evacuated after reports of a Second World War bomb being found in Thamesmead.
A number of residential addresses were evacuated in Galsworthy Close after Thames Water workers made the discovery.
Water contractor Darren Masters who found the device, said: "I immediately recognised it as being some sort of ammunition.
"Having worked in the water industry for over 20 years this is the first small bomb I have found."
Police were called at 1:34pm on June 9 to reports of an unexploded device and a cordon was put in place around the site.
The device was safely removed.
A Thames Water spokeswoman said: "While working on a water pipe we discovered an object in the ground which gave us cause for concern.
"We immediately stopped work and called the police who arranged for it to be removed."
