When a group of friends had a chat about Top Gear in a pub four years ago they never imagined it would lead to them raising thousands of pounds for a teenage cancer charity.

This year they hope to reach the figure of £20,000 and to help them on their way they held a festival at the Crown pub in Shirley.

Families enjoyed stalls including hook a duck on Saturday afternoon before bands took over and played music during the evening.

One of the organisers, Simon Chapman from 29th Croydon Scout Group, said they started raising money after a friend Dave Smith died of pancreatic cancer in 2010.

They chose the Teenage Cancer Trust because all the original people involved were scout leaders.

Most of their fundraising comes from Rally Challenges UK, an annual rally where people from across the country complete 1,000 miles in 5 days.

Mr Chapman said: "We are just a group of people that had a chat about Top Gear in the pub and three years down the line we have raised almost £20,000.

"it's just great. we are very grateful to everyone.

"[The rallying] is something ridiculous for a very worthwhile charity. It's grown ups acting like children and making money."

The next rally is at the end of July.
