A community in Gravesend came together for a litter pick on Friday (June 5) to tackle the increasing amount of rubbish being dumped in the village of Chalk.

Residents young and old clubbed together to collect 11 bags of rubbish and six bags of recycling in under an hour.

One of the organisers, Julie Merritt, said the evening was "full of fun and laughter".

She said: "The litter pick was very well supported with residents of all ages taking part along with 2nd Chalk Brownies and the 3rd Gravesend Scout troop who came out in force."

The Reverend Nigel Bourne opened the parish hall for the evening and provided refreshments to those who took part.

Gravesham MP Adam Holloway and Chalk ward borough councillor Leslie Hills also lent their support, along with the village community warden Steve Gray.

After the success of Friday's litter pick Ms Merritt said they hope to organise another community clean up later in the year.
