Bromley organisations celebrating National Volunteers’ Week have recognised dedicated helpers with a series of special presentations and events.

Veteran volunteer Pat McLean, from Penge, has been recognised for 20 years service with children’s charity Barnardo’s.

The 84-year-old widow began volunteering at the Barnardo’s Eltham store in 1995 before moving to the Bromley branch as the sole volunteer where she remains today.

Mrs McLean, who has four children, nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, said: “It gives me something to do.

“When you live on our own you have to get out, and this gives me a destination to aim for.

“Walking through Bromley with my daughter can be quite funny because people often stop me to say hello.”

And volunteers at the British Red Cross Store in Orpington High Street, were presented with retail skills certificates by Walnuts Shopping Centre manager Martin Price.

The charity is on the lookout for new volunteers at the shop with anyone interested asked to call 01689 832265.
