Gravesend's Cyclopark has received a £50,000 funding boost from Sport England in a bid to improve its BMX facilities.

The park, located just off the A2, is one of 24 sports projects in the south east to share over £2.61 million of National Lottery funding to help improve facilities and playing fields in the region.

Announced yesterday (June 2) the money will fund new lighting, a sound system and race tracking technology.

It comes as Sport England revealed that it has reached a major funding milestone – having invested £5 billion in grassroots sport in the last 20 years.

In Bexley more than £250,000 has been allocated to the Bexley Get Healthy Get Active project under a separate scheme.

The project, which aims to target inactive adults most at risk of diabetes, is one of 16 schemes across the country to enjoy £5.4 million of National Lottery funding from Sport England.

It aims to help more people play sport in the five most deprived wards in the borough, as well as recruiting the help of people who understand how to manage their own diabetes through the use of sport.

Inactivity costs the economy £7.4 billion a year and contributes to one in six deaths – the same proportion as smoking.

Sport England director of community sport, Mike Diaper, said: "By putting prevention at the forefront of their work, these programmes will help to reduce the risk of inactive people developing serious health problems and in doing so, save taxpayer’s money."
