Orpington sprinter Dina Asher-Smith broke the women's British 100m record in Holland, last Sunday, aged just 19.

News Shopper caught up with her to find out what it feels like to be the nation's quickest woman of all time.

Dubbed one of the world’s top sprinting talents, Ms Asher-Smith finished second in her race at the FBK Games in Hengelo with an impressive 11.02 seconds.

Ms Asher-Smith, who trains with Blackheath and Bromley Harriers, based at Norman Park in Hayes, was 0.12 seconds faster than her previous best.

The former Newstead Wood School pupil shaved 0.03 seconds off the national record set by Montell Douglas in Loughborough seven years ago.

She told News Shopper: "I was over the moon and shocked as well, because I didn't think I had run a good race so before I saw the time I was quite disappointed.

"To then see 11.02 was just amazing."

Coached by John Blackie, she has no shortage of junior titles to her name, becoming the 2013 European Junior Champion at 200m and 2014 World Junior Champion at 100m.

Last year, she broke the British Junior 100m record with 11.14 seconds and the British Junior 200m record in 22.61 seconds.

And on this year’s senior circuit, she achieved the silver medal and a new British record in the 60m sprint at the 2015 European Athletics Indoor Championship in March.

Ms Asher-Smith is not only Britain’s fastest woman in history but also a sparkling young academic, studying history at King’s College London.

She said: "I probably spend about 9 to 10 hours per week training, which when you compare it to sportspeople like gymnasts or footballers really isn't that long but it's quite intense.

"Being organised and proactive is how I manage to juggle everything.

"I would like to finish my degree with a good mark and then maybe look into practicing law."

Ms Asher-Smith, who attended Perry Hall Primary School and grew up in Orpington, described her biggest inspiration as World 400m champion Christine Ohuruogu.

She said: "Not only is she a lovely lady but also an amazing athlete that really knows how to perform when it's necessary.

"And I get most of the motivation from my training partners at Norman Park track; we all work hard and motivate each other to push our boundaries."

The youngster is concentrating on remaining fit and fast with hopes of earning a place in the British team for the World Championships in Beijing this August.

Victory at Hengelo on May 24 went to Holland’s Dafne Schippers in 10.94 seconds, a Dutch national record.

DINA ASHER-SMITH'S ADVICE FOR BUDDING SPRINTERS IN THE BROMLEY BOROUGH:

1. They are lucky to be in the borough as we have one of the top athletics’ clubs in the country in Blackheath and Bromley Harriers.

2. The facilities at Norman Park track may be a bit ‘open air’ but you could not wish for a more welcoming and friendly environment.

3. Be patient and have faith in yourself. Not everything that you want will come immediately - it's more of a process of continued effort.
