An Orpington charity which works with disabled children is in the running to win thousands of pounds in funding.

The Maypole Project, based along the High Street in Green Street Green could receive a £5,000 grant from Aviva.

The money would go towards a sports club, Maypole Active, which helps children with a range of conditions including cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, cancer and global development delay.

Running, hula hoops, bean bags and multiple sports involving ball skills are involved in the club, which helps improve motor skills and coordination.

The charity currently runs a sports programme, but need the funds to open it up to more of their families.

One of the children Maypole helps is Jenny Jones, an eight year-old with Global Development Delay, a rare chromosome deficiency, autism and is non-verbal.

In only a few weeks our daughter Jenny has massively grown in confidence and has gone from trying to take everyone’s balls, to sharing them amongst the team, and taking part in team activities, which is a huge improvement.”

Now one of the finalists for the cash, voting for the winner closes on Saturday (May 30).

Chief executive Sally Flatteau-Taylor of the Maypole Project said: “Maypole Active has brought sheer joy to the children taking part, and had a real benefit for their physical and mental health.

“We are a very small charity and desperately need this fund to continue our work.”
