A football coach from Eltham has died in a tragic car accident in the United States.

Peter Underwood, 31, assistant coach of the University of Nebraska women's soccer team, was killed after his car collided head on with a pick-up truck driving the wrong way down the road in Iowa.

He was pronounced dead at the scene on Saturday (May 16).

Iowa State Patrol troopers said there could be charges related to the crash for the other driver.

University of Nebraska athletics director Shawn Eichorst said: "The University of Nebraska Athletics family is deeply saddened by the loss of Peter Underwood and our deepest sympathy and prayers go out to his wife, Austin and their children, Lyla and Jude, and his extended family and friends.

"Peter was a beacon of positive light, a wonderfully talented coach, and an even better family man of great character and faith.

"He will be missed by all of us."

Mr Underwood moved to the United States from Eltham in 2002, originally playing then coaching football.

An avid Charlton Athletic supporter, Mr Underwood then became the youngest person to ever earn the top UEFA A coaching badge.

University of Nebrasker Huskers soccer team head coach John Walker said: "Our entire Nebraska soccer family is profoundly saddened by the sudden passing of our assistant coach Peter Underwood.

"Peter was vital to the success of our programme and he will be missed both on and off the field.

"Our hearts go out to his wife and children."

A spokesman for Charlton Athletic said: "The club were deeply saddened to hear of the news which came to us from the USA on Tuesday morning.

"All at Charlton Athletic would like to extend their sincere condolences to Peter's family."

Mr Underwood is survived by his wife Austin and by his two children, Lyla and Jude.

Peter's father, Rob Underwood of Archery Road, Eltham, left for the United States to attend a memorial service for his son.
