A Sydenham tower block was evacuated following a chemical leak on Monday.

Fire crews were called at 5.50pm to investigate a strong chemical stench at a block of flats on Bell Green.

Around 35 residents were escorted to safety by police before London Fire Brigade arrived on scene.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used specialist equipment to carry out a sweep of the ground floor where the smell was coming from and ventilate communal areas.

After a thorough investigation, fire crews found a chemical leak in a service cupboard and decontaminated the area.

The chemicals are believed to have leaked from the building’s energy system.

Firefighters left the scene almost four hours later at around 9.45pm and residents were allowed to return to their homes.

Three fire engines and around 15 firefighters and officers from Lewisham, Forest Hill and Beckenham attended.

The London Ambulance Service Hazardous Area Response Team also attended.

No was injured.
