Thirty cyclists got the chance to sit behind the wheels of an HGV lorry and experience the view from a driver’s cab in Brockley

The free event at the cycle and pedestrian bridge in Eddystone Road was organised by Lewisham Council and the Met Police to help reduce the number of road casualties in the capital.

Last year, provisional statistics showed that there were 1,040 road casualties in Lewisham of which 15.4 per cent were cycle casualties. Eight of them were serious.

The council’s road safety and sustainable transport manager Liz Brooker said: "In the years that we’ve been running events like these we’ve never come across a cyclist, experienced or not, who was not shocked at how difficult it can be for lorry drivers to see both cyclists and pedestrians in front of and next to a lorry.

"Of the cyclists we spoke to all have gone away with a better understanding of how to stay safe on London’s roads."
