Police want to find four men who fled from a Woolwich street after a man was stabbed 'in his car' just yards from the London Marathon route on race day.

Police cordoned off part of Charles Grinling Walk on Sunday (April 26) at around 1.30pm while paradmedics were dispatched and the Air Ambulance landed nearby to deal with the victim's injuries.

The crime scene was just off John Wilson Street which, hours earlier, had seen 37,000 runners jog past for the London Marathon.

One resident, who did not want to be named, said the victim may have been stabbed by a group of "boys" as he sat in his car.

A spokesman for the Met Police said: "The 19-year-old man was taken by London Ambulance Service to an east London hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

"Detectives from Greenwich are investigating and would like to speak with anyone who witnessed the assault or saw four men running away from the area."

A 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and has been bailed to a date in late May pending further enquiries.

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101.
