Disabled groups from across Bromley joined forces as part of a voter drive ahead of the general election.

The Operation Disabled Vote bus took to Orpington High Street on Friday (April 17), manned by members from Bromley Experts by Experience, Bromley Mencap , Bromley Sparks, Bromley Deaf Access and Bromley People Against Cuts.

The team took to the town in a bus kitted out with election information in accessible formats.

Ellen Clifford helped distribute information to shoppers on Friday, and said: “We had a few people register on the day, but lots of interest.

“Some people weren’t aware of their rights about voting, we spoke to parents of people with learning difficulties who said they didn’t realise they had the right to vote.”

MORE TOP STORIES Ms Clifford, from Inclusion London, added: “There are a range of barriers to voting, some are physical as polling stations don’t have to be wheelchair accessible, so someone comes out with your ballot and you have to vote on the street.

“The main political parties have produced election manifestos in an easy to read format, but many are still not available in British sign language.”

Friday’s event was part of a registration drive across the capital.
