Plans to transform a former police station in Orpington into 83 homes have been approved.

Berkeley Homes has been granted planning permission to build the one and two bedroom flats, a retail unit for shops or cafes and a health centre at the Homefield Rise site.

The site, which Berkeley Homes purchased last year, has been vacant since late 2013 following the Met Police’s decision to close the station and relocate.

Peter Smith, Berkeley Homes Eastern Counties managing director said: “We are pleased to have been given consent for our plans that will bring much needed new homes to Orpington town centre, along with a health and wellbeing centre that will offer services for local people.

“Our plans build on the continued improvements to Orpington town centre and will bring the highest standards of design and finish.

“We are now working hard to progress matters and start on site as soon as possible.

“With so much regeneration in the area, and excellent rail links into London, we anticipate that the new homes at Brunswick Square will attract a wide range of buyers, including first time buyers and young professionals.”

A Bromley Council spokeswoman said planning permission had been granted subject to a legal agreement.

“This will make a positive contribution to health facilities in Orpington, provide additional new homes and enhance public realm in the heart of the town centre, alongside other significant improvements in Orpington.”

The site is located next to a multiplex cinema and leisure development at the Walnuts Shopping Centre on Orpington High Street.

The project will see a seven-screen cinema, three restaurants, a gym and three retailers opening in the autumn and is expected to create 200 jobs.

Orpington High Street is one of more than 50 public spaces to receive funds from the London Mayor’s Great Outdoors initiative, which has given £220 million to improve areas of the capital.
