A 17-year-old motorcyclist seriously injured during a crash at Brands Hatch on Sunday (April 19) has been described as 'stable with a very small step in the right direction.'

Jordy de Jonge, 17, from the Netherlands and James Puttrell, 25, from Hitchin in Hertfordshire fell during the first lap of the National Superstock 600 race.

They were trying to avoid other fallen bikers.

Mr Puttrell was airlifted to St George’s Hospital in Tooting by Kent Air Ambulance, suffering from serious head, chest and limb injuries.

Mr de Jonge had suffered a serious head injury, and was taken by HEMS Air Ambulance to the Royal London Hospital.

Mr De Jonge's team, G&S Racing have revealed that the young biker has been placed in an artificially induced coma at Royal London Hospital.

They added that medication used to reduce the pressure on the brain is resulting in very small improvements.

A statement posted on Facebook said: "It remains to be seen whether these improvements will continue in the coming days and how Jordy reacts to it.

"It is therefore too early to draw any conclusions.

"Furthermore, it is positive that Jordy, in the past 24 hours, as far as can be noted, has not undergone deterioration.
"On behalf of the family, we thank everyone for the many messages of support.
"We as a team have everything crossed for Jordy and James."

The race was stopped immediately whilst two air ambulances attended the incident at the world-famous Colin Chapman Way circuit.
