A man who broke into a hostel room on Boxing Day has been jailed after finding out the hard way that the camera never lies.

Unemployed Antonio Diambu, 22, of The Stowage hostel in Deptford, was sentenced to 11 months in prison after pleading guilty to attempted burglary.

On December 26 last year, a 19-year-old man was in bed when Diambu broke through his door and entered his room.

Diambu left the room immediately, after noticing that the victim was in bed.

Greenwich police identified a man in his 20s as the suspect in the case after seizing CCTV footage from the building.

After a number of enquiries, detectives established the person in the footage was Diambu, who lived on the premises.

He was arrested on January 7.

In his interview, he explained to officers he had not left his bedroom for the entire day but CCTV footage proved otherwise.

Greenwich burglary squad's Detective Constable Andy Sheppard: "Diambu broke into one of the rooms of the hostel as he thought that the occupier was not in, possibly because he wanted to steal a game console. However, he was seen and had to leave empty-handed.

"The CCTV inside the premises assisted officers to establish that Diambu had left his room on Boxing Day and he was subsequently identified as the person responsible for the attempted burglary."

Diambu was sentenced on Monday (April 13) at Woolwich Crown Court.
