The Bromley community from businessmen to firefighters have rallied to help save the life of a two-year-old girl with cancer.

Ruby Young was diagnosed with stage four, high risk neuroblastoma - an aggressive childhood cancer - soon after her second birthday last June.

Her parents are fundraising for NCCA UK (Neuroblastoma Children's Cancer Alliance), and so far have raised more than £250,000 since being launched in October.

Her family are trying to raise £500,000 to fund possible future treatment in America.

Firefighter Ed Haines, of Bromley Red Watch, is one member of the community who is utilising his strength to help Ruby.

Mr Haines, 38, along with the entire red watch are rowing the equivalent length of the Thames - 215 miles - with proceeds going towards helping Ruby.

The crew are completing their task outside intu Bromley, along the High Street, on Saturday (April 18) from 9.30am - 3pm.

Mr Haines said: "We knew we had to do something.

"We started thinking about how we could help, and the rowing machines are portable so we’re taking those along.

"We’re doing this to raise as much money and awareness as possible.

"As firefighters we all do this job because we like helping people, helping the community, and this is part of that."

Ruby’s parents, Victoria, 30, and Rob, 28, brother Freddy, 5, and half-sister Clara, 6, from Kent, are planning on attending if Ruby is well enough.

Ms Young said: “It’s amazing the time and support that we have had.

“I just think for people to take time out of their busy lives to try and save my daughter’s life is heart warming.”

Ms Young continued: “We should have the results at the beginning of next month. We’re really hoping they can operate.

“It’s very risky, but the alternative is leave it and the worst happens.”

Businessman Osman Ertosun is the CEO of Excelcare, whose headquarters are in Widmore Road, Bromley, has vowed to double the amount raised on a separate justgiving page, which has reached more than £5,000.
