A cafe in Biggin Hill welcomed a former prime minister as the new centrepiece of a wartime collection.

The Spitfire Cafe, in Biggin Hill, is adorned with memorabilia from wall to wall after owner Sally O'Connor began collecting since opening the eatery nearly a year-and-a-half ago.

She estimates more than 100 artefacts call the cafe home, including a spitfire, a bomb turned into a table, a life-size cut out of war time prime minister Winston Churchill and a detonator.

Mrs O'Conner said: "We've built it up from scratch, we're still growing though, there’s not much blank wall space left.

"Because there's not a museum this place brings in families and the community.

"It's good for them to be able to share in the history of Biggin Hill."

Famed for its breakfasts, the cafe-cum-museum is holding a special event on Saturday (May 2) marking the 70th anniversary of VE day.

With a raffle giving away prizes such as exquisite drawings of pilots and other scenes from the war, Mrs O’Connor says she has had an influx of memorabilia from all over the world.

She said: "We've had people ringing up from people in America, Canada, New Zealand.

"A man in America wanted to send a bomb, but obviously you can't do that in the post.

"Some things are on loan, we've got photo from the Shoreham Museum.

"I’ll always try and make room for something even if it just on loan for a month.

"I try and rearrange the displays; it's nice to see people coming in and sitting at a different table to see what's on the wall."
