A man with back injuries in Orpington was airlifted to hospital.

The London Ambulance Service (LAS) attended a call in Tower Close around 1.30pm this afternoon (April 16), where a man was said to have suffered back injuries.

A spokesman for the LAS said: "We treated a man for back injuries, he was taken by London's Air Ambulance to Royal London hospital."

Eyewitness Martin Peaple, 26, said: "It started hovering so I took a wander and saw it land in the school.

"There was a film crew with the helicopter, a woman in a flight suit got out and started filming, probably for 24 hours in A&E or something like that."

The Tesco worker from Sidcup added: "An ambulance and the response cars turned up too.

"By the looks of it I think the patient was a man."

The playing fields of St Olave's Grammar School, in Goddington Lane, were used as an emergency landing strip.

MORE TOP STORIES Headmaster of St Olave's Aydin Onac confirmed there was no incident at the school, but the grounds are sometimes used by the air ambulance in an emergency.

Mr Onac said: "We aren't actually aware of what is happening, we believe there is an incident in Orpington.

"They use the playing fields sometimes, we're happy to support them and help out wherever we can."

The LAS also sent ambulances to the scene as well as the helicopter.
