Orpington neighbours have pulled together to rebuild a man’s house for free after it was vandalised.

Residents set up a funding page to help a 54-year-old man, who suffered a brain injury, after his doors and windows were smashed by youths.

Over the weekend (April 11 and 12) people came together to fix the property, in Homefield Rise, after more than £1,000 was raised.

Matthew Hooper, 25, is the owner of Thermotec Property Maintenance ltd and is one of the companies who donated their time and materials for free to help the restoration.

Mr Hooper, from Sidcup, said: "When I heard about the story and what was happening I was more than happy to give my time to help this man.”

But upon arrival they realised the job was greater than anticipated.

Mr Hooper said: "There was a rat’s nest above the shower, dead rats in the roof; there was an open sewer underneath the kitchen unit.

"It's not been properly built and there were holes in the roof."

The time and parts his company supplied would normally cost £2,000.

Mr Hooper said: "All the fixtures and fittings have been donated by a company in Eltham, H Lilley & Co ltd; we’ve even got a company providing a new window and door.

"Decorators D&C painting and decorating in Catford have supplied all the paint and the decorating materials. Someone else is doing the plumbing.

"The support over the weekend and the week has been brilliant."

"People have really pulled together, they’ve got him a new bed, kitchen, bathroom suite, people have been offering to donate things like washing machines. It’s been a community project.

"Everyone's been helping out. It was so heart warming he's going to be so happy we hope."

MORE TOP STORIES The man’s cousin, Matthew Myles, 54, from Ramsden Estate, said: “It’s been absolutely fantastic, I can’t believe how many people have come forward to offer their help both financially and their time.

“Complete strangers have been helping, they’ve never even met him but they’re driving miles, picking things up at their own expense.

“I’m stunned at the response, it’s unbelievable.”

His cousin, who he does not wish to be named, has been staying elsewhere during the refurbishment but was "overwhelmed" with the response Mr Myles said.
