From a low-fi snack van to a hipster concoction of brioche and fancy jams to high-end beef patties, is there anything more comforting than a meaty (or veggie) burger in a soft bun? It’s the ultimate sandwich and south east London has some great places to grab one.

We asked our Twitter and Facebook followers for their tips and set about compiling this list.

News Shopper: INSTITUTION: Cathy Murphy serves a punter at the tea hut on Blackheath which may be shut down

Blackheath Tea Hut

Open 24 hours a day, this little wooden hut off Blackheath is a local institution and home to the famous Animal Burger. Kevin Harris on Faceook reckons it’s the area’s best burger ‘no contest’, as did Rita Ann Jennings Matthews.

Burger Bear at The Old Nun’s Head, Nunhead

Strictly-speaking, the Old Nun’s Head is a few yards off News Shopper’s patch but this place was making so many waves that we couldn’t not include it. The Junes said on Twitter: “That'll be the @burgerbear burgers at the @oldnunshead.” Krystelle Wass tweeted: “Definitely @burgerbeartom @theoldnunshead. Insanely good!”

The gourmet burgers are made with meat from Flock and Herd in Peckham and Burger Bear prides itself on using local, sutainable sources. One of the highlights of a Burger Bear burger is the unique, mind-blowing bacon jam.

Mother Flipper at Brockley Market on Saturdays from 10am to 2pm

Making Saturdays a little bit sweeter, Mother Flipper cook up a storm at Brockley Market using 28-day aged Angus beef and fresh brioche buns. And they’re a fan favourite too. Mayaz Rahman, Tom Kirk and Brockley Market themselves all tweeted us to rave about the burgers while nominations came in through Facebook too.

Tom Kirk tweeted in reponse to our shout-out for nominations: “It's got to be @MotherFlipperuk at @BrockleyMarket.”

News Shopper:

Rising Sun, Eltham High Street

Pubs have long been a great place to pick up a tasty patty and it would seem the Rising Sun in Eltham is a particular favourite. Its menu includes nine varieties of burger including the Dirty Burger, branded ‘so wrong it’s right’, including burger, salad, chilli con carne, onions and jalapenos. Poppylou tweeted: “The gourmet burger is amazing!”

News Shopper:

Five Guys, Bluewater/The O2

It was America’s fastest growing burger chain when it launched over here to much fanfare and it’s safe to say Five Guys has made an impression on these shores in the last year or so too. Pitching itself between upmarket burgers like Byron and Gourmet Burger Kitchen and the ‘dirty’ hipster offerings, it is more fast food but the burgers are fresh and made with grain-fed beef and fries cooked in peanut oil. And there’s not a freezer in sight.

The Waiting Room, Deptford High Street

Not every great burger is a beef burger, as the guys at Deptford coffee shop The Waiting Room prove. This place specialises in vegetarian and vegan offerings and Geme Neko on Twitter reckons they deserve a spot on our list. She tweeted: “If a veggie/vegan burger is your thing then you should pop down to @WaitingRoomSE8 in Deptford #SE8”

London Beer Dispensary, Brockley Road, Crofton Park SE24

The first bar from Penge craft brewers Late Knights opened up last may and is also a foodie hotspot. Iain Metters tweeted us to say: “They do a good burger at @LDNDispensary by Crofton Park station.” Not to be undone by feint praise, the bar hit back with: “good you say? They're bloomin' brilliant!!!!” So there.

News Shopper: Delicious new Byron burger joint in Greenwich serves up a tasty treat

Byron – Bluewater/The O2/Greenwich Promenade

Like ‘em or loathe ‘em, you’d bet the Tories know the best places to get a bite to eat. And so it proved when chancellor George Osborne got peckish while putting the finishing touches to his spending review in 2013. Understandably he wanted a burger, but not any old nonsense, so Gideon opted for the refined Byron. It’s fresh and exciting but, as the tabloids delighted in pointing out, not cheap.

Hot Rod Diner, High Street, Northfleet

A vintage-style all-American diner like you might see in Happy Days, Hot Rod has it all: black and white tile floors, red leather booths, 20-odd delicious burgers on the menu and even a Buick on the wall. Regular events include preposterously difficult food challenges.

News Shopper:

The Railway Tavern, Bromley North

Antic pubs are renowned for a few things: shabby chic, lots of beers and good tucker. It’s the latter that brings this recently re-opened boozer to our attention. It’s Railway Cheese Burger with pickles, relish, onion jam and fries may cost a tenner but it is juicy and tender and impresses more with each bite.

Starburgers, Cross Street, Erith

An old-school burger cafe in Erith, this is another place that’s a bit of a local institution and famous for its meaty offerings. Rebecca Brown responded to our call on Facebook, writing: “Star burger Erith for me!!”
