A man from Bexley has been jailed after attempting to rob a passenger at Woolwich.

Anthony Palmer, 22, pleaded guilty to attempted robbery after he tried to snatch a metal chain from round a passenger’s neck at Woolwich Arsenal DLR station.

He had tried to grab the chain when they were both going through the ticket barriers shortly after getting off the DLR on October 28 last year.

Palmer was unsuccessful but continued to pursue the 27-year-old victim.

Palmer, from Montrose Avenue in Welling, was sentenced to 10 months in prison by Blackfriars Crown Court last Wednesday (March 25).

“However the victim managed to keep hold of the chain and ran from the station – pursued by Palmer.

“Metropolitan Police officers arrested Palmer a short distance from the station.

“The sentence handed down reflects the seriousness of the offence. This was a calculated attempt to rob a rail passenger at a busy station.

“The persistence of Palmer, and the fact he pursued his victim, left the man very shaken.”
