A 48-year-old man was arrested after far right extremists Britain First launched revenge on campaigners who confronted Nigel Farage at his local pub in Downe.

The Britain First activists tried to force their way into a meeting held by the ‘Beyond Ukip’ group at an office block in Old Street.

Anti Ukip protesters are said to have chased Nigel Farage and his family out of the Queen’s Head pub before jumping on his car bonnet as he drove away on Sunday, March 22.

Mr Farage later said his children were so scared by their behaviour that they "ran away to hide".

In a Britain First video of the incident on Monday evening (March 30), leader Paul Golding said: “We’re in a building in north London.

“We found out that the same people who harassed Nigel Farage and his family and frightened his children are meeting here tonight.

“And as you can see, look at them, barricading themselves in the room rather than facing the righteous anger of British patriots.

“We’re here tonight to give them a taste of their own medicine. These people are bullies.”

Beyond Ukip co-organiser Dan Glass, 31, told News Shopper: “It was absolutely terrifying. I was worried for everyone in the room, particularly the pregnant mothers.”

Asked whether his own group’s behaviour in Downe was dissimilar from the actions of Britain First last night, he said:  “Our protest was very family friendly, funny and witty.

“We did a conga line dance down the street - a world apart from 15 thugs breaking and entering.

“If they wanted to give us a taste of our own medicine, why didn’t they wear fancy dress?”

This afternoon, Beyond Ukip released its own footage of the incident.

Ukip has always distanced itself from Britain First's actions.

A Met Police spokesman said officers were called to Charles Square at 8.15pm on Monday following reports of a disturbance.

Police attended and found a group of eight to 10 men attempting to disrupt an ongoing political meeting organised and attended by the public.

The 48-year-old, who was from the group who attempted to disrupt the meeting, was arrested on suspicion of assault.

He was taken to an east London police station for questioning.

No injuries were reported.

Enquiries are ongoing as Hackney police investigate.
