PLANS to redevelop the B&Q site in Sidcup are among a trio of schemes causing concerns for townspeople.

The three proposals were raised at the recent meeting of Sidcup Town Partnership, held in the New Generation Church in Birkbeck Road, and provoked angry comments.

DIY giants B&Q had been developing plans with Coca-Cola Enterprises in Cray Road, Foots Cray.

They wanted to build a new B&Q shop on an empty site opposite the firm's exisiting store.

Coca-Cola would also use the new site for some of its operations.

This plan was turned down by Bexley Council in August 2005.

But new B&Q proposals show an 80-room hotel, car showroom and retail and industrial units on the site of B&Q's present store, with a new, two-storey store on the former Sainsbury's-owned site opposite.

The plans also include flats and an underground car park.

A number of residents at the meeting were also worried about proposals to redevelop the Lamorbey swimming pool site once the new pool opens off Hurst Road.

They were angry the plans now include the council car park at the back of the site and because their homes could be faced with a multi-tiered car park and flats at the bottom of their gardens.

Bexley Council is consulting on the plans and people have until March 23 to make their comments.

The third redevelopment causing concern is Athena House in Station Road, Sidcup. Cathedral Group hopes to build shops, 120 flats, boutiques, a restaurant, a walk-in NHS centre and a new piazza.

Some residents have already dubbed the plans the "baby of Marlowe House", the multi-storey building opposite.

The company says its plans, which have already been lodged with Bexley Council, will revitalise the area around the station.

But is admits an NHS walk-in centre is speculative as it does not yet have a client.
