A PROJECT which uses motorbikes to get young people back into mainstream life has been saved from closure.

The Archway Project takes young people aged between 11 and 18 who are excluded from school, are young offenders or on the fringes of crime.

It trains them in maintenance skills and teaches them the dangers of riding bikes illegally.

But the project, based in Harrow Manorway, Thamesmead, ran into financial and operational problems last autumn and was facing potential closure.

Now Trust Thamesmead, the community trust for the town, has offered management support and the project is back on track.

It has been restructured and has a new board of trustees and a fund-raising group.

The project is supported by Bexley and Greenwich councils and works with more than 30 referral agencies.

And the longer youngsters stay with the project, the more techical skills they can learn, including NVQ equivalent qualifications which can lead them into employment.
