10:58am Saturday 24th February 2007

A POLISH lorry driver has been arrested after a fatal crash which closed a section of the M25 near the Dartford Tunnel yesterday.

A 67-year-old woman died at the scene of the accident on the M25 between junction 29 and 30.

The car she was travelling in left the road and landed in a ditch.

The driver, a woman believed to be in her late 20s and early 30s, managed to get out the car on her own.

An Essex Police spokesman says a 43-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He has been released on bail to return on April 21.

The M25 was closed between junctions 29 and 30.

Delays of around 90 minutes were occuring between junction two Essex-bound and junction 30.There were delays after this section of the road reopened but now traffic is flowing again.

Congestion also built up around the Blackwall Tunnel as motorists searched for other routes.

Ambulance crews were called to the scene at around 7.10am.

The driver of the car involved in the accident has been taken to Basildon Hospital for treatment after complaining of shoulder pain.

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service said: "She was fully immobilised with a neck collar and spinal board at the scene.

"The 67-year-old female passenger suffered very serious injuries and, sadly, was declared dead at the scene."
